HAROLD NORWOOD, manager of the local office of the Carolina Motor club, is pic tured above holding one of the new license tags for 1958. They go on sale here and across the state on Thursday, and Mrs. Nor wood reminds motorists that they must have form FS-1, before they can purchase their new plates. This is in accordance with the recent ruling of the General As sembly, and it means, simply, that drivers must establish their financial responsibility in case of an accident before they get their ‘58 tags. Form FS-1, shown at the left, is a certificate of insurance, and they are being mailed to motorists who already have lia bility insurance. Those who buy insurance after January 1st, will get their forms at that time. All cars must have new tags after February 15th. As indicated by the tag Mrs. Norwood is holding the series of plates in Transyl vania will begin with the letters “DC”. Again this year, the de partment is stressing safe driv ing by placing the caption across each tag, “Drive Safely”. Mrs. Norwood’s office, which is loca ted in the L & H Appliance com pany will be open daily from 9:00 a. m., until 4 p. m., and un til noon on Saturdays. (Times Staff Photo) Tax Listers Ready To Begin Work Of Listing Property In County Thursday Supervisor Says A Penalty Is Prescribed By Law For Persons Failing To List Tax listers in Transylvania are all prepared for the chore of tax listing during January. According to Lewis Osborne, tax supervisor, listing will begin on Thursday in the different town ships of Transylvania and will con tinue through January 10th. After that time, listing must be done here in the court house. Mr. Osborne urges residents of Transylvania to list early the prop erty on which they’re going to pay taxes in 1958. A penalty is prescribed by law for those persons who fail to list. Property that must be listed falls into three major categories: 1. All real estate and tangible personal, property owned on Janu 2. A poll or capitation, tax re quired of all male persons between the ages of 21 and 50 as of the first of the New Year. 3. Every dog, male or female, more than six months old owned or kept on the first. The tax listers for the townships CALENDAR OF COMING EVENTS Wednesday. January 1 — New Year’s Day. Tuesday, January 7 — Brevard high vs. Owen, college gym, 7 p. m. —Turn to Page Eight Opposite Brevard College Methodists Moving Into New Church, Formal Opening Jan. 12 Members of the Brevard Metho dist church are moving into their beautiful new church opposite Bre vard college, and the formal open ing is set for Sunday, January 12th. According to the pastor, Rev. Douglas Corriher, persons in charge of moving are: Wilson Gregory, chairman of the property commit tee, and his group; and, G. H. Far ley, superintendent of the Sunday school and the teachers. Various church meetings will be held in the new edifice after Wed Medical Society Sets Uniform Fees For All Physicians The Transylvania Medical socie ty has established a basic fee sche dule for its members, according to Dr. Carl Plumb, secretary of the group. Mr. Corriher says that elaborate —Turn to Page Four Transylvania Pointing To New Year, Outlook Said Good, Wednesday Holiday TO PAY $72,000 TO MEMBERS OF SAVINGS & LOAN Resources Are Now Over Four And One Half Mil lion, Jerome Says Semi-annual dividend checks, totaling $72,000.00, will be mailed | to members of the Brevard Feder al Savings and Loan association on Dec. 31st, Jerry Jerome, the execu tive vice president, announces to-1 day. This makes a total of $132,000.00 paid out in dividends during 1957. Mr. Jerome declares. Dividend | cheeks the first of July totaled $62,000.00. Resources of the association are four and one-half million, and the interest rate being paid is three • and one-half per cent. The annual meeting of the stock holders will be held on Wednesday.! It is understood that the lease , expires shortly after the first of the year and was not renewed. The stock is being transferred to another Rose’s store in a neigh boring town. Piggly-Wiggly Sold By Kelley To Winn-Dixie Winn-Dixie has purchased the Piggly-Wiggly from Curtis Kel ley and has already assumed op eration of the new super mar ket opposite Brevard college. Mr. Kelley, who came to Bre vard 21 years ago with the Dixie company, has accepted a position as buyer with the Winn-Dixie i company, and will assume his du i ties in Greenville around Janu WPNF Program Highlights First Baby In Transylvania In ’58 To Be Honored On Program Wednesday The first baby of ’58 in Transyl vania county will be honored on a special radio program over WPNF on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock, Bobby Hoyle, station manager announces today. Several Brevard firms are offer ing fine prizes to the first baby and his or her parents, and all listen ers of WPNF are urged to hear the special program on Wednesday. Pettit, Jr., is seeking a successor. Mr. Pettit says that persons in terested in the job must apply to a member or the chairman of the county board of commissioners. These gifts are being offered by a number of Brevard merchants who are participating in the annual Baby Derby. Sample Ballot Is Carried On Page Two Ballots for directors of the Bre vard chamber of commerce have gone into the mails, and Mrs. John Ford, the executive secretary, re quests that they be returned by January 14th. The ballots will be tabulated on the evening of the 14th. and the 25 persons receiving the highest num ber of votes will serve as directors during the new year. New officers will be elected at a call meeting a week following the 14th. Containing 201 names, the ballot this year is one of the largest, if not the largest, in the history of the Brevard chamber of commerce. The secretary emphasizes that only paid up members are listed on the ballot. A sample ballot is carried on page two, first section, of this week’s issue of The Times. According to the secretary, the Brevard chamber of commerce has enjoyed one of its best years dur ing 1957. Transylvanians will join with the rest of the nation in ringing out the old and ringing in the new year tonight. The Transylvania Times is be ing published ahead of its regular schedule in order that subscribers may have their paper on New Year’s day. Wednesday is a legal holiday in Brevard and stores and offices will be closed. The bank and the post office will also observe the hoIA iday and there' will be no delivery of rural or city mail. Advanced gifts chairman has not yet been selected. New Church At Horse Shoe Will Be Used Sunday The second new Methodist chureh in the Brevard circuit will be formally opened Sunday at 1 Horse Shoe. Rev. W. A. Kerr, pastor, announ ces that the church will be used by the congregation for the first time on Sunday, January 5th, at the 11 a. m. worship service. Rev. J. W. Fitzgerald, the district superinten dent, will deliver the sermon. Also assisting with the opening service will be the pastor, Rev. M. M. Armstrong, Rev. €. Edward Roy and Rev. George King.
